JOB PURPOSE
Instructional coaches engage in coaching cycles, centered on partnership principles, to develop teacher capacity and improve student learning. AIS instructional coaches collaborate across languages to co-plan grade-level content aligned with the Primary Years Programme (PYP), emphasizing transdisciplinary learning through the lens of inquiry. They promote a joy of learning while collaborating to analyze learning data, support curriculum development, and model best practices. Instructional coaches support staff from 3K to Grade 5.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead and support mathematics instruction through collaborative coaching
Work closely with classroom teachers to plan and deliver inquiry-based mathematics lessons that align with the PYP framework, ensuring conceptual understanding and transdisciplinary connections.
Guide teachers in differentiating mathematics instruction for learner variability
Support teachers in designing data-informed mathematics lessons that challenge each student within their zone of proximal development, emphasizing multiple entry points and a concrete-pictorial-abstract progression in mathematical concepts.
Support teachers in creating an intentionally inclusive classroom
Collaborate with teachers to plan equitable and inclusive mathematics instruction that honors students' cultural backgrounds and diverse problem-solving approaches and being mindful of ethnic and cultural impacts on students' learning.
Facilitate professional development in mathematics pedagogy
Lead professional learning sessions focused on concept-based mathematics instruction, inquiry approaches, and effective strategies for developing mathematical thinking and reasoning skills.
Foster a growth mindset approach to mathematics learning
Support teachers in creating classroom environments where mathematical risk-taking is encouraged, mistakes are viewed as learning opportunities, and all students see themselves as capable mathematicians.
Develop mathematics curriculum and resources aligned with PYP
Collaborate with teachers to create and curate high-quality mathematics resources that support inquiry-based learning and conceptual understanding while maintaining alignment with PYP outcomes and approaches to teaching.
Support the integration of mathematics across transdisciplinary units
Guide teachers in identifying and leveraging authentic mathematical connections within units of inquiry, helping students see mathematics as a tool for understanding and exploring real-world concepts.
Model effective mathematics instruction and assessment practices
Demonstrate exemplary mathematics teaching strategies through model lessons, co-teaching, and coaching cycles, emphasizing formative assessment and responsive instruction.
Analyze mathematics assessment data to inform instruction
Work with teachers to interpret student mathematics data, identify patterns in learning, and develop targeted interventions and opportunities for challenge.
Support vertical alignment of mathematics instruction
Ensure coherent progression of mathematical concepts across grade levels, facilitating collaboration between grade levels to support student mathematical development over time.
Demonstrate expertise in current mathematics education research
Stay current with best practices in mathematics education, sharing research-based strategies that support conceptual understanding and mathematical thinking in the PYP context.
Support teachers in developing language-rich mathematics instruction for multilingual learners
Guide teachers in implementing effective language scaffolds and strategies that support mathematical discourse, including the use of sentence frames, mathematical vocabulary development, and visual representations to help multilingual learners access and communicate mathematical concepts confidently.
REQUIREMENTS
Ideal candidates will have experience with diverse pedagogical approaches, a passion for teaching, and a commitment to lifelong learning. They will thrive in a multilingual, multicultural, inquiry-based environment.
- A relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- At least 5 years of teaching experience as a primary teacher
- At least 3 years of experience as an instructional coach or advanced training/certification in instructional coaching best practices
- Proficiency in English required, with additional proficiency in Spanish, French, German, or Chinese preferred
- Successful experience in an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary, or IB PYP environment is preferred, though strong applicants with experience in other curricula are also encouraged to apply.
- Enthusiastic about teaching within a multicultural and multilingual environment.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
- Knowledgeable and experienced in second language acquisition (SLA) approaches and classroom application.
